I’ve seen and done some really awesome, incredible things so far. Here are my favorites!
Most recent: hosting three panels at Star Trek Mission: NY, including a standing-room-only feminist discussion with Trek ladies Marina Sirtis, Terry Farrell and Nana Visitor.
We had an epic feminist discussion, Marina was her badass uncensored self, Nana offered up her wisdom left and right, and Terry gave us all the feels talking about her experiences as a woman in showbiz and all the pitfalls that accompany it. One more photo!
As I said at the end of the panel, it was an honor and a privilege. I am very emotional thinking about how I looked up to these ladies since I was 7 and then got to share the stage with them in an unprecedented, honest discussion. Watch the panel in all its glory on YouTube right now!
Here is a peek into our Women In Trek panel at Star Trek: Las Vegas:
I’m sitting next to Kate Mulgrew. Is there anything else that needs to be said????
In March 2016, I covered a panel on human trafficking at the UN. Read my full writeup on ScreenPrism, and behold this glorious photo with Gillian Anderson, who lent her time and talent to this beyond worthy cause. Women’s issues like this are extremely close to my heart and I admire all the women working at the UN and around the globe who make a difference every day.
Also in Marhc 2016, I was published on The Mary Sue! I had to take a screen grab to commemorate this moment. Judging from the comments on the article, entitled “Adoption, Agent Dana Scully and Me,” adoption from both the biological mother’s side and the adopted child’s side is a subject that doesn’t always get the best treatment in pop culture. Here’s hoping we can change that, one story at a time.
2016 has been filled with the utmost of nerding so far! Lots of Star Trek and X-Files moments – understandable, since Star Trek is celebrating 50 years and The X-Files returned to television after a 14-year absence. Previous years were certainly not too shabby either, as you can see here:
I went to BookCon after writing a piece on my love for Sarah Dessen, who actually READ IT and then we chatted after her YA panel. I saved this Twitter exchange as “Sarah Dessen read my blog” so you can tell the kind of excitement her work fosters in me!
In the same realm as writing, I’ve really upped my engagement via Legion of Leia, ScreenPrism, and other media outlets. I love being part of the Legion! Jenna Busch has been a wealth of insight and encouragement. I admire her deeply and I’m fairly sure she is a geek machine that never sleeps.
I’ve written a great deal about women’s representation in the media, how I’ve learned to stop caring so much about why other people can be mean and just be my most awesome self, and also that I really, really love the sassy elf king of the woodland realm:
I also love love love to travel! I’ve had scotch in Scotland, seen a Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Globe in London, sweltered in at the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, stargazed on a Hawaiian volcano, was awed by the Northern Lights above the Arctic Circle, marinated in the waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, sipped coffee at a French cafe, enjoyed paella on the Mediterranean in Barcelona, seen the tulips in Amsterdam, and journeyed across the American West. The best part? I still have SO MUCH left to see and do!
Either myself or my husband took all these photos! Isn’t that awesome?
Heading off to Hogwarts….
