Greetings! Here you can find out all about Amy, founder of Shoes & Starships!
What is this blog about?
Shoes & Starships is a lifestyle blog for geeks of all shapes and colors, but specifically caters to lady geeks. I’ve found that the average lady geek is not just into varied and epic fandoms, but is also interested in the world that exists outside of their favorite genre universe – travel! fashion! cupcakes! – and wants to be a fun, productive citizen of planet Earth while wearing fabulous shoes.
Who is the blog mistress?
I put my English degrees to good use as an editor during the day, I’m a Star Trek lover for life, and I’m an intense collector of all kinds of knowledge. (Feminist literary criticism? Check. All the X-Files trivia ever? Double check. Mad love for Hannibal, Orphan Black, and Outlander? Checkity check check.) I’m a cat momma to two adorable fur babies, Archie (fluffy and orange) and Rosalin (small and stripey). I hoard tiny, pretty notebooks, I’m a casual gamer in that I like to Ninja up some Fruit on the regular, and I am an avid traveler. My three favorite places so far are Iceland, Paris and Hawaii. And the United Kingdom. And Switzerland. (I cannot pick just three, that is torture.) Up next? Hopefully Italy! And Scotland! And Croatia! (See? It’s a problem.)
Why did I start Shoes & Starships?
While there are many entertainment and lifestyle blogs that I adore to pieces, I had yet to find That Blog with a combination of scifi/genre musings with real-life fun stuff and thoughts from a geeky feminist navigating this crazy planet. That is why I created Shoes & Starships! Judging from convention attendance around the world these days, a huge portion of us humans are letting our geek flags fly with more joy than ever before. Which is so awesome! But I’m also ready to spark and engage in a greater conversation about what it means to be an intellectual chick in this male-centric genre I love. Feminism and fandom is undergoing so many changes right now, and I love being part of this movement.
Where am I based? Do I speak at conventions? What about podcasts?
I live just outside New York City, and I’m an East Coaster through and through. I attend many events, conventions, plays, festivals, etc. in and around NYC, and I am a regular attendee at Star Trek: Las Vegas every August. I’ve been a featured panelist there several times! This past year (August 2015), I ran my own panel on Literature in Star Trek in addition to once again being part of the Trek Girls panel (which is a non-loaded way of saying “Feminism & Trek”). I love my Vegas peeps and I’m looking forward to returning in 2016 for the 50th anniversary! It’s gonna be an amazing party and you all should come rock out with your Spock out.
I’ve been a guest on several Star Trek podcasts on Trek.fm, the Mission Log Podcast, the G&T Show, and the fabulous Women at Warp. Check them out! If you’d like me as a guest, I’m happy to be part of your podcast – just ask!
What are your favorite posts?
To sum up:
If you are a geek girl at heart, can’t get enough of interstellar travel and want to go back to the Island and bring your collection of Star Wars action figures, have a look around and stay awhile!
